Using EcoSoya PB to make tapers?

Postby bvac » Mon Jan 26, 2009 4:12 pm

Hi all, I'm trying to make taper candles with EcoSoya PB wax. I picked PB because of its melting point and hardness. I'm not using the dip method, but pouring molds of the same size, about 3/4" in diameter. However it seems that no matter the type of wick I use it always results in tunneling very soon after lighting the candle. I'm currently waiting to test a 50% PB / 50% white beeswax blend, which definitely feels better to the touch. Aside from that, do you have any wick recommendations?

Is there anything else I can do to make a successful soy taper-like candle? I don't think I've ever seen pure soy taper candles commercially made, so it may not even be feasible for all I know. If there is a soy wax that behaves more like paraffin, where it becomes soft and pliable before liquifying, I would certainly like to know!

Unfortunately, there are no soy waxes that perform like paraffin at this time. We are working on that. Current soy is not pliable or malleable like paraffin and therefore cannot be made into tapers at 100%. You are correct in mixing beeswax to get the performance you need for tappers. 50% sounds like a good place start your testing. I suggest trying a wick 1 or 2 sizes smaller than one that would work for 100% beeswax.
